Barcelona edge out AC Milan as the Champions League’s most successful team
ANALYSIS
By Kris Voakes
Barcelona are the most successful club in the modern era of the Champions League, according to a Goal study.
The world’s biggest football website collated the yearly records of every club ever to qualify for the European Cup under its new banner since 1992 and found that the Catalan outfit pip AC Milan to the title of the greatest team in the greatest club competition in the world.
Using the Fibonacci points formula of ascending value, teams reaching the first stage of any one edition were given one point, those making the round of 16 gained two, quarter-finalists three, semi-finalists five, finalists earned eight and winners were allotted 13 points. And, over the course of the 21-year history of the new-style tournament, three-time winners Barca collected a total of 92 points compared to the Rossoneri’s 86.
Real Madrid come in just behind the pair with 85 points, meaning all of the podium positions are taken up by clubs with three Champions League wins to their name. Double winners Manchester United (1999 and 2008) and Bayern Munich (2001 and 2013) complete a star-studded top five, with sixth-placed Juventus a full 23 points behind the current holders, emphasising the superiority of the leading quintent.
Barcelona have been particularly boosted by their performances over the past six seasons in Europe, with their victories in 2009 and 2011 helping them to record 46 points since 2007. Their first 46 points took 15 years to achieve, during which time Milan had racked up 75 points. The Italian giants’ recent stuttering form on the continent has seen their lead evaporate since their most recent triumph in Athens six years ago.
While the likes of Ajax, Juve, Porto and Marseille may all have suffered somewhat in recent times, they remain in the top 20 thanks to their previous form in the Champions League. New superpowers, on the other hand, are nowhere to be seen. Paris Saint-Germain are placed 33rd with just one semi-final appearance in 1995 to their name, with fellow big-spenders Manchester City sitting joint-83rd having made it only as far as the group stage in their two efforts.
The Blaugrana’s presence at the top, together with Madrid’s placing of third, has tipped the scales towards Spain in the battle between the continent’s nations. Primera Liga clubs have tallied a combined 249 points since 1992, with even the likes of Mallorca, Real Betis and Real Sociedad having qualified for the event over the years.
Predictably, English clubs come in second with a total of 228 points, while Italy sits third in the rankings just 12 points further back. Bundesliga clubs are placed fourth, ahead of France in fifth. In Champions League history, a total of 152 clubs have made it past the qualifying stages, representing 38 different nations.

Plan B without Messi
The fears when Messi pulled up with a muscle injury to his right thigh on Saturday in Almería, and requested a substitution, all came true when it was confirmed that he will be out for two to three weeks. This forces Tata Martino to come up with a reliable solution for the Champions League match against Celtic.

The Barcelona manager is considering various possibilities, although the one which looks most likely is selecting Fàbregas as a false number 9, as he is the player who has played the greatest number of minutes in this position whenever Messi has not been available.
Alexis and Neymar also have their chances, but picking Fàbregas also solves the problem of the midfield, as he could be lined up alongside Xavi and Iniesta. Up to now Martino has been rotating them, but the Celtic game would be an ideal scenario to select them all.
Apart from the selection of Fábregas, Neymar's starting in Glasgow can be taken for granted. He warmed up in Almería but in the end did not play one single minute, so he will be called on to be the key player in attack at a ground where Barcelona lost last season. His skills will be very welcome against the rock-like Celtic defence.
Playing on the wing is bringing Neymar a lot of good results, as he has shown himself to be an excellent passer of the ball. Up to now, Tata has not yet tried out his Brazilian star in the middle, but it is an option he is seriously contemplating.

Barca tries to get Messi out of international duty
Confirmation of Messi's injury also set off alarm bells in Argentina. The countdown has commenced for the 2014 Brazil World Cup and with only 253 days until the tournament kicks off, any injury to the Argentina captain is a headache.

Now more than ever, Tata Martino's words are gaining strength. The Barça coach spoke about the need to rest Messi and his other players, irrespective of whether the Argentine always wants to play. "They signed me to make decisions and I’m going to continue making them for the good of my players", the coach had said after the game against Real Sociedad.
On Saturday, after Barcelona's win over Almería, trans-Atlantic communications started between the Argentine Football Federation's medical team and its counterpart in Barcelona. Alejandro Sabella received confirmation of the Argentine star's injury this very Sunday, after the pertinent medical examinations were completed.
Messi travelling to Argentina to undergo a check-up with the Argentine national team's doctors has not yet been ruled out. Sabella plans to contact Barcelona this very Monday to discuss what steps must be taken. Depending on how the injury progresses, they will decide whether Messi will travel, even if he cannot take part in the matches against Peru and Uruguay, or whether they will follow his recovery from afar.
The central defender returns to a stadium which is already familiar to him. On 7th November last year, he played 70 minutes and returned home defeated (2-1) – the first game which he lost wearing the first team shirt.

He failed to win again in the Champions League – after the game in Glasgow, he played the full ties against PSG and Bayern. His side never managed more than a draw against the Frenchmen and lost both matches against the Germans. Nevertheless, the youngster's performances have been good and he has played in three games this year.
Martino announced his squad on Sunday, which includes 19 first-team players and two from the reserves: Patric and Sergi Gómez. They both played against Mallorca in the game which Barça B lost (0-1) at the Mini Estadi after a Casadesús goal.

Bartra has an axe to grind at Celtic Park
Bartra will continue to partner up with Piqué on Tuesday. Messi has now scored more goals than any player in the history of Real Madrid
Lionel Messi has now scored more competitive goals than any player in the entire history of Real Madrid after overtaking Blancos' legend Raul on Saturday.
The Argentine attacker headed home the second for Barcelona in the Catalans' 4-1 win at home to Real Sociedad in La Liga on Tuesday night to draw level with Raul on 323 strikes in all competitions, but his fantastic goal at Almeria on Saturday has now seen him surpass the former Madrid favourite.

Messi's 324 strikes in all competitions have come in just 388 games for the Camp Nou outfit - and he is still only 26.
Leo, with 62 Champions League goals, is also closing in on Raul's record of 71 in Europe's premier club competition.
Raul's 323 goals for Real Madrid came in 741 games over 16 seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu. Messi, meanwhile, has hit 324 in only his 10th campaign for the Catalan club.
The 26-year-old was withdrawn with a thigh injury just short of the half-hour mark against Almeria and will be sidelined for between two and three weeks, Barca have confirmed.

How Messi's SMS SOS ousted Ibrahimovic
Lionel Messi was upset and, as usual, it was Josep Guardiola who bore the brunt. The Barcelona coach's mobile phone had just vibrated and he stared at the small screen, troubled. "Look at this", he muttered to his close friend, Manel Estiarte.

It was autumn 2009 and the Barça team bus was headed home after a league fixture. Though the exact words vary depending on who is telling the tale, all accounts agree on the gist of the Argentine's message to his coach: "Well, I can see I'm not important to the team anymore, so..."
Yet again, Messi was hiding behind the keyboard. Little matter that he was seated just a few rows behind Guardiola on the bus. The best player in the world has always been a man of few words and found it easier to communicate via text message than face-to-face. But that does not make him any less ambitious or willing to assert himself to preserve his own status.
There is a turn of phrase offered up by the Barcelona dressing room that perfectly sums up how the Argentine goes about things: "He's no dictator, but he certainly makes his presence felt in his own way".
The arrival of Ibrahimovic, a player Guardiola had pushed hard to sign, had come as a blow to Messi. His quest for unrivalled supremacy, to be unanimously regarded as the main man at Barcelona and not to have to fight for this standing – because everyone automatically put him on this pedestal – had come under challenge. With Ibra in the picture, all that was threatened. One SMS was all it took to get the matter back under control.

Messi to miss Celtic clash
FC Barcelona will be without Leo Messi for Tuesday's trip to Glasgow. Leo Messi could be out for two to three weeks. Messi will at the minimum miss upcoming matches against Celtic and Valladolid, after which comes the international break.

Messi had planned to play for Argentina despite the Albiceleste having already qualified for the World Cup.
The Argentinean could miss Osasuna away on the 19th as well, but he should be healthy for Barça's trip to the San Siro on the 22nd. Or, at the very worst, the Clásico that will take place the following weekend.
Lionel Messi was substituted after scoring in Barcelona's 2-0 win at Almeria on Saturday following a right leg injury. Messi gave Barcelona a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 21st minute. He asked coach Gerardo Martino to be substituted after making a long sprint to pressure the goalkeeper.
Injury came one day after Lionel Messi answered a judge's questions along with his father in a tax fraud case.

Record comes at a high price
Tata Martino's Barça broke the record of league wins at the start of a season, having racked up its seventh consecutive victory in Almería, but it has also lost Messi through injury in the process. Leo opened the scoring and Adriano got the second.
On Saturday, FC Barcelona strengthened its lead at the top of the BBVA League table with a deserved away victory over Almería, winning by two goals to nil in the Juegos del Mediterráneo stadium.

Argentine Leo Messi was the major protagonist in the first half, for both good and bad reasons. Tata Martino's decision to rest Neymar and Xavi on the bench meant the current holder of the Ballon d'Or was the real star of the first thirty minutes.
Messi opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a fine strike from medium range. But hardly ten minutes later he was forced to leave the pitch with a hamstring problem in his right leg, making him doubtful for the Champions League tie.
It was only after Messi's departure that Almería managed to create any real danger at the end of the first half. However, these chances failed to produce any results.
Barcelona held back in the second half, defending its advantage following the second goal, which was scored by Adriano. Almería attempted to close the gap in the closing stages of the match, but to no avail.

No rest for Messi
Leo Messi is set to be selected by Argentina for his country's coming games despite the fact that the South Americans have already sealed qualification to the World Cup.
It had been said that Argentina would allow the Barcelona forward to rest, but it seems not to be the case. Barça has not made an official request to rest the player and Argentina manager Sabella will include Messi in his squad and he will feature in Argentina's last home game at the Monumental.
Javier Mascherano may also be included in the squad, despite being injured – which will keep him out of Barça's next two or three matches. Sabella will call the player to assess his fitness, as he usually does with his players who are not 100%, before taking a final decision. Mascherano will miss Argentina's first game against Peru due to suspension.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Scolari announced his squad, which includes Neymar and Alves, for Brazil's friendlies in Seoul and Beijing.

Messi, keen to come clean
Messi's lawyer has said that the player and his family wish to cooperate with the justice system and not enter into a battle with the State on the interpretation of the tax laws.
Cristóbal Martell delivered a statement outside the courthouse in Gavà, where the Argentine star was questioned by a judge for just over a quarter of an hour regarding alleged tax fraud amounting to around €4 million euros for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Messi's father, Jorge Horacio Messi, answered questions shortly before the footballer. He also stands accused of the same infraction and is represented by the same lawyer, who stressed to reporters that "the Messi family has given instructions for total transparency, clarity and co-operation".
"The questioning has been done with the same will to be transparent and it is evident that there was little intent of committing fraud and a great willingness to normalize relations with the tax office", said the lawyer.
Messi's arrival at the Gavà courts shortly before 11:00 in the morning was greeted by a flurry of excitement - cheers from fans coupled with a few isolated shouts of "thief".
After an hour and a half in the court building, the player left with the same smile on his face as when he arrived and waved at the crowd of onlookers who had gathered at the gates of the building.
The Barça star did not stop to speak to fans, but he did give them the thumbs up.
Iniesta is an emblem of Barcelona-Martino
Gerardo Martino has described Andres Iniesta as an "emblem" of Barcelona and is confident he will soon sign a new contract. The 29-year-old is yet to agree a new deal as the club attempt to tie him down beyond 2015, although the Spain international insisted earlier this week he was not "at war" with Barca over the negotiations.Martino has now described Iniesta as a symbol of the Blaugrana and remains fully confident he will soon commit to new terms.

"In every club there are players who are images of their clubs. I see Iniesta as an image of Barca," Martino told a press conference on Friday. "I think it's quite logical he should renew, I see him as one of the emblematic players at the club and we want him to stay."
The former Newell's Old Boys coach went on to discuss the fitness of Lionel Messi, stressing his belief that his management of the player's fitness was paying off despite the Argentine's frustration at being substituted in the win over Real Sociedad.
"Messi's looking good. I can't compare him to how he was in other seasons at this stage, but he's looking very good indeed. He recovers well from one game to the next. Against Rayo [Vallecano] he didn't score but it was one of the best games he's played since I've been here.
"Of course they don't like being taken off - no player does. I don't ask them about being rotated because I know what they'll say to me. The important thing is that they are fit for the final stages of the season next year."
Martino also believes Neymar will benefit from a similar pattern of rest due to his exhaustive commitments with the Brazil national team.
"Neymar's case is similar to Messi's. Neymar will get his chances, as I said previously. Taking into account the internationals he played in August, he's played more minutes than anyone in the squad apart from goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Now he's been called up to the Brazil squad and in previous friendly games he's played the full 90 minutes.
"I want to look after him, protect him. He's got to rest. The important thing is that the players are in good shape towards the end of the season. There's been games every three and a half days - that's a lot of football."
Real Madrid were given a fortunate penalty to beat Elche near the end of the match on Wednesday, but Martino refused to criticise the officiating in Spain, instead calling on his side to focus on maintaining their own strong run of form.
"It's difficult to talk about referees. Sometimes you don't want to talk just after a game when it's not the right time. There's no point in throwing referees to the lions," he said.
"I didn't see the game. As for the [Madrid] derby, it'll be a good game to watch. It's certainly the game of the week. Of course, we've got to think about winning our games. The important thing is that we beat Almeria."
Finally, Martino indicated that Carles Puyol was close to a return following a lengthy injury lay-off, but refused to divulge whether Marc Bartra would keep his place in the starting XI.
"Bartra? I won't mention the starting line-up. The best thing about Marc is his character, he's a young player, although he has to be more relaxed in games.
"Puyol? He had a practice game with the youngsters, that went well. He played almost the whole game. He's been out for seven months but he's much closer to coming back.
"When a player is injured we will not rush them back. The important thing is for them to recover fully."

Lionel Messi in court over tax fraud
Barcelona footballer and father are accused of setting up shell companies in South America to avoid €4.2m in tax from sponsors and others.
The world's leading footballer, Lionel Messi, and his father will appear in court on Friday over allegations of tax fraud.
The Barcelona and Argentina star and Jorge Messi are accused of evading €4.2m (£3.4m) in tax on earnings made from endorsements from his principal sponsors – Adidas, PepsiCo and Proctor & Gamble – and a number of other companies.
The prosecution alleges that they set up shell companies in Uruguay and Belize to avoid paying tax in Spain. Both men deny the charges, saying the deals were done by Messi's former agent without their knowledge. The alleged crimes took place between 2007 and 2009.
Messi, voted world player of the year four times, and his father will be questioned in a closed session in a court in Gava, Barcelona, the wealthy neighbourhood in which Messi has a home.
The father and son this year paid back €5m (£4.2m) to the Spanish state, but this has not prevented the prosecution: the government has cracked down on tax evasion, with the country in financial crisis. The hearing on Friday will determine whether the court will pursue them for alleged tax evasion,
The allegations are a serious blow to Messi's golden image. He came to Barcelona as a young boy, and has grown up through the Catalan team's youth system, earning him the love of his fans. He has a reputation as an honest player, rarely exhibiting the exaggerating diving and histrionics often associated with the Spanish game.
Messi, who earns around €16m a year just from his contract with Barcelona, is widely considered the best footballer in the world, on a par with his idol Maradona.
It is an increasingly common practice for leading footballers to set up image rights companies in low-tax countries, through which they are paid their additional sponsorship salaries, thus avoiding the duty they might pay at home.
Messi and his father deny these charges, saying: "We have always fulfilled our tax obligations following the advice of our tax consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation."

Neymar's opponents have seen seven yellow cards
A dream partner, but a nightmare opponent.
With every match he plays, Neymar is one step closer to fully settling in at Barcelona. The Brazilian is progressively more in synch with Tata’s side and, what is more important, he is fine-tuning his partnership with Messi. The two players combine to score a goal in almost every game. Last Tuesday, that moment came in the 7th minute when Neymar sped down the right wing and then crossed to the far post, leaving the Argentine little to do except head the ball into the back of the net.
Neymar’s statistics confirm that he is adapting very well. He has created several goalscoring chances and the only thing lacking has been his aim in front of goal. He has missed more chances than he should have, sometimes due to poor aim, but sometimes due to excessive generosity, in particular with Messi. He has only scored once in the league from nine shots on goal. That was against Real Sociedad during Barça’s most recent match.
Neymar has become a very real nightmare for the opposition. Proof of this is the number of fouls he receives. He has been fouled 17 times in the league, and that is not all, because fouls also lead to yellow cards. The Brazilian has become a thorn in the opposition’s side. To date, their players have seen seven yellow cards for play involving Neymar. These could have been more, because the seven yellow cards are just the ones seen by referees, and they have missed a few others.
ANDRÉS ASSURES THAT AN AGREEMENT TO RENEW WILL BE REACHED
Andrés Iniesta has decided to speak about his much talked about renewal: "My wish is to finish here, and it's the club's as well. There is no complication. This is the best place where I can be. I'm 29, I know that I still have a few years of good football in me, and I want to live them here. It's not about money, it's about the wishes that I have."
"It's not a Barça – Iniesta war", the Spanish international concluded.
Talking about Barcelona's new playing style, he said: ""For me, there is no debate. Long passes have been made for a while now, as have goals scored on the counter-attack. We have to be in good shape, and when we are, everything is easier - be it attacking or defending. For good or for bad, this team has a certain way of playing and I don't think we've done bad by it."
Regarding the Elche - Real Madrid controversy, he said: "Sincerely, it's not that I don't want to give an opinion, just that I didn't see the game. I found out the result, and then like everyone else, I saw the images. In the end, to talk about the referees in these situations is complicated, because some people have one take on it, and others, another. It's best to leave the referees in peace. They have their own committee to decide what has to be done."
Ex-international handball player Masip wants Barcelona presidency
Enric Masip, ex-Barcelona handball player, announced yesterday that he would be presenting his candidacy as president of the Catalan club in the next elections. Many see him as the best player in the history of Spanish handball. He played 205 games, and scored 656 goals for his national team.

"I want to present myself as I would really love, with nobody standing behind me, to serve the club of my life. Fresh air is needed. I am hurt, resentful, and feel unfairly treated by how I had to leave Barcelona. It wasn't necessary to treat me like that, but it was something personal", he said on Cadena SER's radio programme 'La Gradería'.

Rosell ridicules Real Madrid penalty call
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has ridiculed the decision to give Real Madrid a stoppage-time penalty that allowed them to beat Elche 2-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo's free kick looked set to see the Blancos through Wednesday's Liga clash, but the hosts equalised in added time to make a draw look certain.
However, referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez - who had been making questionable calls perceived to be in the visitors' favour all game - made a controversial decision to give Carlo Ancelotti's men a penalty that Ronaldo converted.

Rosell mocked the call and said the decision speaks for itself.
"I still can not believe it," Rosell told reporters at Thursday's RFEF assembly in Bilbao.
"Looking at the evidence, there's no need for me to make any more comment on the issue."
The result means Real Madrid sit just two points behind the Blaugrana in La Liga, as opposed to four points, while Atletico Madrid are sandwiched between them with six wins out of six in second.
The referee in the Elche-Madrid game, Fernandez, has been rested for the next two matchdays by Spain's Refereeing Technical Committee following the torrent of criticism towards his decisions.

Comedy and theatre - Controversial Real Madrid win provokes Pique
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa were involved in a curious online exchange after Carlo Ancelotti's side controversially beat Elche in La Liga on Wednesday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead with a free kick following what looked like a fairly harmless challenge and after Richmond Boakye had levelled in the 92nd minute, the Portuguese handed his side a last-gasp win from the penalty spot as he converted a highly contentious spot kick deep into added time.
Home fans thought the final whistle should have been blown by then (even though Elche scored in added time), while the penalty award (for an alleged foul by Carlos Sanchez on Pepe) was another dubious decision. Referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez had also earlier failed to send off Sergio Ramos for a cynical body-check on Ferran Corominas when the Madrid defender had already been booked.

"I'm watching a comedy film on Canal + Liga," Pique tweeted after the final whistle. "It's always good this time of night."
But later, Arbeloa hit back as he wrote: "Very happy with the three points! [And] I'm glad some people have swapped theatre for cinema, that's always good!"
Elche's dramatic defeat on Wednesday means the promoted side remain in the bottom three after six rounds of matches and coach Fran Escriba was furious with referee Muniz Fernandez.
"I don't plan to talk about the referee," he told reporters after the game. "I say it sincerely. If I start to analyse the second yellow card [not given] for Ramos, the penalty at the end or the excessive time added on, I believe it is not worth talking about that gentleman (Muniz Fernandez). Even if I complain, I have nothing to gain."
Meanwhile, midfielder Carlos Sanchez was indignant at the decision to award a penalty for his challenge on Pepe in the fourth minute of added time. "He [Pepe] tugged me and pulled me to the ground," the Colombian complained. And his team-mate Edu Albacar added: "The feeling we have is that we were robbed..."
Pepe, however, claimed the spot kick award was justified. "The Elche player grabbed me and pushed me to the ground," the defender said. But Edu Albacar refuted that version. "Pepe is blind..." he added.
Madrid boss Ancelotti was more calm, but called for improvement if his side are to have a chance of beating Atletico in the capital's derby clash on Saturday. "It is better to talk on the pitch than off it," he explained. "But if we play like we did tonight, we won't win the derby."
Real remain two points behind Barcelona and Atleti (both with six wins apiece) after six rounds of the Primera Division.

With new Barca style goals flying in from all areas
Barcelona has mustered a total of 27 goals so far this season in all three of the competitions the team has taken part in. Leo Messi is the side's top goal-scorer with a total of 10 goals, which works out at more than one goal per game - an unsurprising statistic given the Argentine's record over the last few seasons.

However, the most surprising thing is the fact that Barça's goals have come from all over the pitch and you could even form a perfect team with the players who have got their names on the score-sheet. Under 'Tata' Martino it seems that everyone has the responsibility of scoring no matter where they play.
Four defenders have managed to find the net so far: Alves (in two games), Piqué, Bartra and Adriano. Perhaps it's not so surprising to see the full-backs getting the goals (Alba scored frequently last year), but it is to see the centre-backs finding the net. They have been given licence this season by the manager to get forward often and for this reason Piqué and Bartra have managed to score – the former also coming close on several occasions.

''Tata'' evolving a new Barca style
Every press conference by 'El Tata' has become an interrogation in which he is accused of betraying Barcelona's style of play. But a closer look back in time shows us that all the club's recent managers have modified some kind of aspect because the opposing teams had begun to decipher the team's strategy.

Cruyff went from three to four defenders
Cruff's eight-year spell as manager was littered with different changes. The team also frequently played long passes, which was one of the reasons why Koeman was played at the back. Cruyff even failed to field a single natural defender in one game against Valencia: with Goico, Eusebio and Koeman. The team used a back-three, but after a 6-3 defeat in Zaragoza, the Dutchman reconsidered and decided to play four.
Van Gaal used wingers to create chances
The Dutch coach returned to Cruyff's system after Robson's Barça had played a 4-2-3-1 formation. It was the return to the Dutch way of playing, but Van Gaal's side followed stricter tactics. Van Gaal went back to using fixed wingers: Luis Figo and Rivaldo.
Rijkaard changed the position of Xavi and Puyol
The first thing he did was to revert to the 4-3-3 formation and put an emphasis on controlling possession, which had previously been lost. He did not make major tactical changes, but he moved Xavi Hernández ahead by about 10 metres. Another important change he made was to move Puyol from full-back to centre-back.
Guardiola introduced 'false number nine' and three defenders
Pep was the real innovator in the system. He continued Rijkaard's strategy but added new elements. He moved Messi and then changed to a defensive back-three.
Tito went back to using wide players and large share of possession
One of the changes implemented by Vilanova was to go back to using wide players. Tito's Barça also played one match with eleven home-bred players, which Guardiola was unable to do.

We are the only team that wins 4-0 and people look at our possession
Gerard Piqué has described as over the top the debate over the possession his Barça side enjoys during games, especially after the great start it has made. "It is given too much importance. We are the only team that wins 4-0, and people argue if we have had more or less possession. It is a statistic that should not be as important as the media makes out", he told Barça TV.

Piqué did admit that Barça must play well in addition to just winning games: "This is Barça, we know how it works. When you win you have to do it playing well. We are at a club where the fans have always wanted it this way, for those who didn't know it was like this they are warned that this is how it is".
However, Piqué did say he would be happy to play on the counter-attack if Martino deems it necessary: "At times we come up against opponents who we have to take the ball from and then become more horizontal in our play, with a bit more variation. Tata wants to instil that in us and I welcome it".

The crisis about possession is nonsense-Sandro Rossel flabbergasted by criticism
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell claimed that he is happy with the team's performances and rued the 'Azulgrana' fans' propensity to always question everything "even when things are going well"
Speaking during the annual ceremony at which Barça presents gold badges to 50-year members, Rosell stated that he is at a loss to explain talk suggesting the club is in crisis just because it has had less possession than in other years.
The Barça honcho sought to put things into perspective by alluding to the situation the club was in half a century ago. "In 1963 we had a real crisis, not just one about possession like now, which is nonsense. Back then, Barça finished sixth in the league, 18 points off the top. Imagine if that happened now. What would we do: burn down the Camp Nou?".
Rosell went on to praise the team's results – "We've won 35 matches this year; not bad, is it? But instead we have to go and question everything" – before reminding the fans that the first-team squad currently includes 17 players who graduated from the 'La Masia' academy.
The president believes Barcelona is on the right track: "The club is in great shape in sporting terms; the different professional teams have already won five trophies this season, and it's only just got underway".
Rosell also beat the drum for the club's finances: "When we arrived we were €500 million in debt and we're gradually lowering that figure towards the €200-million mark. The future will be all about being able to pay the best players in the world".
Messi and Neymar - teaming up
The connection between Messi and Neymar did not just work yesterday, it was pure magic. Something to behold. The Brazilian was the first to score, securing his first Spanish league goal into the bargain. He already had one under his belt from the Super Cup at the Calderon, but had not yet managed to hit the mark in La Liga. Three minutes later, success came courtesy of Messi, who headed in an extraordinary assist from Neymar.

'La Pulga', meanwhile, has already notched up seven goals in the domestic championship and has scored in the last 13 consecutive league games played at Camp Nou. He is now just one goal away from Raúl's 323 Real Madrid record. An awful lot, it has to be said.
The two players were subbed off to great applause from the crowd, but Messi did not seem happy with Martino's decision. The Argentine saw his number being shown in the 80th minute and headed for the bench looking disgruntled. Tata called to him several times, but 'La Pulga' did not turn around. It is well-known that Messi likes to play every minute he possibly can.
"Messi never wants to leave the pitch, but my duty is to take care of him and avoid an injury. We need Leo to be in top form. Every time the game permits us to take care of him, we will", was Tata Martino's comment on the matter.

'Messi never wants to be substituted' - Martino
The Argentine was unhappy with being replaced on Tuesday but the Camp Nou boss has defended the decision as long-term thinking.
Gerardo Martino has defended substituting star player Lionel Messi during Barcelona's 4-1 triumph over Real Sociedad on Tuesday.

The Argentine showed obvious discontent after being replaced in the second half of the Liga win, but the head coach insists that his decision was made in the best interest of the player and the club in the long term, while praising the team's overall performance.
"Messi never wants to be subbed off, but it's my task to take care of him," Martino told reporters after the match. "We need him at end of season as well as now.
"My way of thinking won't change, I repeated the whole time how I want to play, maybe this game helps some to see things clearer.
"We've played a very good game. The way we played in the first half was wonderful - it was a pity we couldn’t score more."
The 54-year-old went on to laud €57 million man Neymar following his debut Liga goal, while insisting that Alexis Sanchez played well despite not scoring.
"Neymar is an exceptional player," the Argentine trainer added. "It has surprised us how hard he wants to work for the team.
"Alexis didn't score, but he worked very hard today, both in defence and attack. He does things that few forwards do."

Barcelona continued their perfect start with win over Real Sociedad 4-1
Barcelona continued their perfect start to the La Liga season as they topped fellow Champions League participants Real Sociedad 4-1 Tuesday night at the Camp Nou.
A first league goal for Neymar and strikes from Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Marc Bartra keyed the Barca victory. An Alberto De la Bella goal for Real Sociedad prevented the shutout.
As has been his mantra all season, Barcelona manager Gerardo 'Tata' Martino made more changes from the team that defeated Rayo Vallecano over the weekend. Andres Iniesta was brought back into the fold in the middle of the pitch where he was joined by Xavi and Busquets. In the back goalkeeper Victor Valdés directed a back four of Dani Alves, Gerard Piqué, Javier Macherano and Adriano. Up front, Martino reverted back to his South American trio of Neymar, Messi and Chilean Alexis Sánchez.

Barca struck quickly with two goals inside the first ten minutes. A fourth minute cross from Sánchez was poorly dealt with by the Real Sociedad defense and the Brazilian had an easy to tap-in to officially open up his La Liga scoring account. Four minutes later Neymar played the role of playmaker as he galloped down the left side before crossing into the area. Originally it looked as if Neymar's intended target was Sanchez but the ball spun over the head of the Chilean and right into the path of a diving Messi who beat Real Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo at the far post. It was Messi’s seventh career goal in eight matches versus the San Sebastian side.
The hosts added their third in the 23rd minute as an intended Bravo clearance landed at the feet of Busquets who rifled in a left-footed shot from outside the area.
It took about an hour before Real Sociedad ever found their way into the match. Left back Alberto de la Bella cut the deficit to 3-1 for the visitors with a 63rd minute goal but the majority of the work was done by Imanol Agirretxe who showed great touch by controlling a deflected ball at the back post while being defended by Piqué before slipping a pass into De la Bella for the goal.
Two minutes later the Basques nearly made it 3-2 but Antoine Griezmann’s shot from distance was nicely saved by Valdés, who then made another stop of the rebound effort from Marco Sangalli.
Barca sealed the match with their fourth in the 76th minute as substitute Bartra scored his first ever league goal with an easy tap-in after good work from Messi on the left side of the area before crossing to the young defender.
The defending league champions will look to continue their unbeaten start with a trip to newly-promoted Almeria this Saturday.

As time passed, however, the pain did not subside and half an hour into the match, Marc Bartra started warming up. The youth team player substituted Mascherano in the 34th minute.

Neymar thrilled with debut Liga goal
"I'm very happy with my first goal in the Liga," the 21-year-old is quoted as having told reporters after the match. "The win was more important though. It may not have been a really nice goal, but the main thing is it went in!

"Messi and I understand each other better each day. He's a genius.
"I'm not suffering from too many fouls, it's normal, it's part of the game."

Busquets injures Mascherano
Shortly after kick off, Busquets stamped on Mascherano's knee with his studs and the Camp Nou feared the worst. The Argentine reached down to hold the injured area and, after limping for a while, continued playing.

Ancelotti: "It's surprising to see Barca score on the break"
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti gave his views on Barça and Atlético de Madrid at a press conference earlier today, Tuesday. The Italian branded Barça's counterattacking style in Vallecas "surprising", while lavishing praise on Diego Simeone's side.
"I think Atlético de Madrid has been the biggest surprise. They're in great form, have won every match [in the league] and really gave Barcelona a run for its money in the Super Cup. Barça is always very competitive and plays great football, but I've been more surprised by Atlético, which is showing a lot of spirit and personality, just like its coach. He has moulded the team in his image. We are improving and I'm happy with the work we're putting in, because the team is showing the desire to improve in every training session. They are top professionals. We've had some good moments, but we need a bit more consistency. That's the area we most need to work on".

Back on the subject of Real and Barça's style of play, he added: "I think it's always up to the coach to adapt to the attributes of the players at his disposal, but it's not easy. Of course, a coach has to have an idea of the game plan he wants to impose, but without losing sight of the players' characteristics. It was surprising to see Barcelona score on the counterattack against Rayo and have less possession for the first time in so long".

Record-breaking-Barca, on its way to a seven win season start
FC Barcelona will be looking for yet another win against Real Sociedad, taking it ever closer to a new club record for the best la Liga start in its history, playing a team which has taken a draw away from each of its away matches.

Barcelona is still two wins shy of snagging the record, which its Real Sociedad and Almeria ties should deliver. Seven straight wins would see Tata Martino's Barcelona bettering the past achievements of the club's glitterati, with six consecutive victories from Cruyff (1990-1991), Van Gaal (1997-1998), Guardiola (2009/10) and Vilanova (2012/13).
However, the Barça faithful are more interested in seeing its team make a clear improvement in their game following the past few matches in which, despite convincing wins, the style was a world away from that with which it has been associated over recent years.
Under these circumstances, Barça is embroiled in the long-standing debate about whether the aesthetics and the idea of controlling the game through ball possession takes precedence over the effectiveness of the goals and victory.
In the midst of it all are the players, who are backing a change towards a much more defined approach, giving away the ball at certain moments and going on the counterattack. Eight goals in the last two games are swinging the vote, for the moment, towards the new coach as opposed to sticking with the club's trademark style.

Javier Mascherano and Gerard Piqué have featured in every game so far. The Argentine has been a literal ever-present, clocking up 720 minutes across five 'La Liga' matches, both legs of the Spanish Super Cup and the Champions League opener. Piqué, who made way for Bartra in the latter stages of the European tie, has only played 9 fewer minutes.
Bartra has yet to start a game, while Martino seems reluctant to shunt Song or Busquets back into defence, as Tito Vilanova did on a few occasions last season.
Together with Elche and its Botía-Lombán partnership, Barcelona is the only team to have named an unchanged centre-back pairing in the first five rounds of league fixtures. Even Real Madrid, for whom Pepe and Ramos lined up together for the first four 'La Liga' clashes, felt the need to rotate this past weekend.
This lack of rest could end up taking its toll for the 'Azulgranas' in the shape of injuries. Piqué was a fitness doubt for Saturday's clash in Vallecas, while Mascherano has already played almost double the minutes this season as he had at the same stage last time around.

No rest for weary Piqué and Mascherano
Just a month into the season and the lack of strength in depth at the heart of the 'Azulgranas' backline has been exposed. Having been thwarted in its attempt to sign Thiago Silva and Marquinhos, Barça once again finds itself seriously short on cover at centre-back, meaning Tata Martino could soon have a headache to contend with.

Martino delighted with Neymar impact
The Argentine believes the Brazil international is maturing and praised him for improving the defensive side of his game

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino says Neymar has done a "fantastic job" for the club since arriving at Camp Nou in a €54 million deal in the summer.
The Brazilian has been eased into life at the club, making most of his appearances as a substitute from the bench, but has caught the eye with flashes of his brilliance, including his first goal for the club against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup.
And after Martino handed Neymar a start in the 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, before bringing the 21-year-old off on 80 minutes, the Argentine coach insisted he was more than pleased with his progress.
He told AS: "The press judge how he has adapted by asking whether he has scored goals or not, but he does a fantastic job in creating chances and recovering the ball. He has adapted very quickly and I'm very happy with what he has done so far.
"Don't forget that he had a long summer with the Confederations Cup, his hectic transfer to the club and the long trips he has had to make which have prevented him from training properly. We are very satisfied with everything he has offered us."
Saturday's Liga clash saw the Blaugrana enjoy less possession than their opponents for the first time in 317 games, leading to questions from the media regarding the club's change in style, but Martino believes his methods have only come under the microscope because he is not from the same stock as his predecessors.
"I don't get annoyed by the debates. Whenever you have a team that has been as successful as this side, these debates will occur, especially when the coach isn't from Catalonia or from Holland," the 50-year-old added.
"I haven't come here to make any changes, and if you want to question our possession, then last year the average was 66% and this year it's 65,8%.
"If because of that 0.2% you want to say we have changed everything, then go ahead. And with regards to us playing long passes, I remember that Rafa Márquez used to play here, so it's not as if the club hasn't seen that before."

Man United Prepare Astonishing Bid for Andres Iniesta
Old Trafford side linked with Nou Camp raid of epic proportions.
Man United boss David Moyes is said to be readying an astonishing move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Iniesta according to Sports Direct News. The 29 year old Spanish international has rejected a new deal offered by the Catalan giants and this has led to speculation that the one club man could consider a move away from the Nou Camp due to the wage offer made by Barcelona and this has led to interest from the Premier League title holders.
Moyes failed to win the race to sign Thiago Alcantara, who opted to join Bayern Munich, as well as his pursuit of Cesc Fabregas and though the former Everton boss did land Belgian Marouane Fellaini he is still keen to bring in further reinforcements.

Iniesta is rightly considered one of the most talented creative midfielders in European football and should he decide to leave Barcelona then there will be no shortage of offers for his services.
Andre Iniesta has made 463 appearances for Barcelona and has 90 national team caps to his name and has won a host of honours including a World Cup, two European Championship winners medals and six La Liga crowns and three Champions League wins to boot.

Barcelona far from perfect - Martino
The Blaugrana coach says there is a lot to improve regarding his men's display on the pitch, while he feels Neymar has adapted quickly since his arrival in Spain
Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino believes his side are "not close to perfection", despite their five-match winning streak in La Liga this term.
The Blaugrana thrashed Rayo Vallecano 4-0 on Saturday, but lost the battle for possession for the first time in 317 competitive games.

And the Argentine coach is not satisfied with his side's display on the pitch, calling from improvement in the coming encounters.
"We have perfection in points, but we are not close to perfection in the game and it is clear that we have many things to improve," the 50-year-old told Sport.
"What we saw in the second half against Ajax and Rayo I would build up upon and I think we're on the right track.
"The players feel increasingly more comfortable and will continue to improve. "
Youngster Neymar assisted Pedro's second of three goals on Saturday, and the coach is pleased with his performances since arriving at the club this summer.
"Very happy with his work and we should not forget that he had a difficult season with the Confederations Cup.
"He had a whooping arrival. We're very pleased with what Neymar is offering so far."

Cruyff: Messi-Neymar partnership will not work for Barcelona
The Blaugrana legend believes the Brazilian does not have the required work-rate boasted by fellow wingers Pedro and Cristian Tello
Johan Cruyff expects Neymar to continue to struggle alongside Lionel Messi in the Barcelona starting XI.

The Brazil star extended his scoreless run in La Liga to five games in the 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, and Cruyff - who had previously suggested Messi should be sold to accommodate Neymar - believes the 21-year-old's poor work-rate leaves the team too unbalanced when the Argentine is also playing.
"I never said that Neymar was a bad player. The question is how he [Neymar] fits into the team," the 66-year-old told Globoesporte.
"Neymar and Messi are two attacking players, but that means there’ll be one less player doing the defensive work. That could be a problem.
"Barcelona have a style of play in which the players on the wing have to work hard; however, Neymar isn’t a work-horse like Pedro or [Cristian] Tello."
Neymar's headed goal against Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana remains his only competitive strike for Barcelona since his €57 million move this summer.
